SUMPUR KUDUS, West Sumatra — On the night of Nov. 19, 2025, a former elementary school gym teacher dropped to his knees in a muddy Sumatran forest and wept. The tears were not of despair but of relief: Septian “Deki” Andriki had just located a flower that had eluded scientists for more than a decade.
Andriki, a self-taught rafflesia hunter who quit teaching to pursue the parasitic, leafless blooms across Indonesia, had spent 13 years chasing false leads, whispered rumors and half-remembered sightings. The quarry was Rafflesia hasseltii — a species that can span a dinner plate in diameter, emits a rotting-meat odor to attract carrion flies, and had not been confirmed in the wild since the early 2010s.
The breakthrough came through a tip from a local resident. That led Andriki, Oxford Botanic Garden’s Chris Thorogood and Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency researcher Joko Ridho Witono on a nearly day-long trek through tiger-inhabited rainforest in Sijunjung Regency. When the team found a blood-red, white-speckled bud unfurling its petals, Andriki could not speak.
“After 13 years, a 23-hour journey, risking tiger attacks, nearly dead phone batteries, I couldn’t talk,” he later told reporters. “I just cried.” A forest ranger initially thought he had been possessed; Thorogood called himself “the luckiest guy alive.”
Footage of the emotional rediscovery went viral across Indonesian, British and American outlets. But behind the viral moment lies a serious scientific milestone. Rafflesia hasseltii belongs to a genus of roughly 42 recognized species — bizarre, chlorophyll-less parasites found only in the rainforests of Sumatra, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Brunei. Lacking leaves, stems and roots, rafflesias spend years hidden inside host vines, emerging only during rare blooms that can reach nearly a meter across.
A Global Effort to Name the Unnamed
That combination of rarity and biological strangeness makes rafflesias a holy grail for field botanists — and nearly impossible to protect. Researchers estimate about two-thirds of known hasseltii populations grow outside legally protected forests, exposed to logging and land conversion. The rediscovery, part of a multinational research effort backed by the University of Oxford, collected DNA from more than a dozen rafflesia variants across Indonesia to map the genus’s evolutionary relationships.
The Sumatran find is only the most photogenic example of a far larger, quieter enterprise. At the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, scientists formally describe roughly 200 new plant species annually — about one in every 10 named worldwide. In 2025 the garden highlighted discoveries ranging from a Costa Rican moonlight cactus — confirmed new after a two-decade wait for it to bloom — to a persimmon relative named for a late botanist and an endangered sapodilla-family tree known from just two sites on Madagascar’s coast.
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History reported nine new species, three new genera and one new subgenus in 2025. Botanist Laurence Dorr published four new mallow-family species from Guyana. Perhaps the most striking finding: a new subgenus of Vitis (the grape genus) based on two threatened wild species from Chiapas, Mexico, distinguished by red flowers and stems dotted with prominent pores — only the third recognized subgenus of this economically vital crop in nearly a century.
Discovery is no longer limited to remote jungles. In Texas’s Big Bend National Park, volunteer botanist Deb Manley photographed fuzzy maroon flowers she’d never seen before, uploading images to the citizen-science platform iNaturalist. That led to the description of an entirely new genus — the “wooly devil” — the first new plant genus documented in a U.S. national park since 1976.
In Hawaii, researchers used a drone fitted with a robotic collecting arm to reach a cliff face on Kauai inaccessible to humans. The drone returned samples of a previously unknown carnation-family plant, Schiedea waiahuluensis — believed to be the first new plant species ever discovered by drone.
Racing Against “Dark Extinction”
Taken together, these discoveries tell two stories. The first is of persistence and luck: a 13-year hunt, a two-decade wait for a cactus to bloom, a chance photograph, a robotic arm reaching where no hand could. The second is sobering. Many plants botanists are finding for the first time are already among the rarest organisms on Earth — restricted to a single mountain range, a single sand dune, a single cliff face — and already threatened by habitat loss.
Naming a species is not merely academic, botanic garden scientists argue. It is the necessary first step before any legal protection, funding or conservation plan can exist. A plant without a name is, in practical terms, defenseless. Only after Rafflesia hasseltii was confirmed alive could researchers begin advocating for stronger protections in forests where most of its populations still sit outside any protected boundary.
Scientists estimate that thousands of plant species worldwide remain undescribed, many already declining toward extinction before formal recognition — a phenomenon termed “dark extinction.” Each year’s tally of new species is not simply an inventory of nature’s surprises. It is a race against time, run one flowering cactus, one drone flight, one tear-streaked jungle trek at a time.
