A degree too warm overnight. A millimeter of rain at the wrong hour. A frost that arrived three weeks early, or a rainy season that never arrived at all. Flowers, in the most literal sense, are weather made visible. Their color, stem length, fragrance, and the very day they choose to open are instructions written by temperature, light, and water. For thousands of years, growers have read those instructions and answered them. What has changed in the last two decades is that the instructions have started to contradict themselves.<\/p>\n<p>This is a story that travels from the volcanic highlands of the Andes to the shores of a shrinking Rift Valley lake, from the bulb fields of Holland to the marigold plots outside Pune, from the rose greenhouses of the Ethiopian lowlands to a rented flower farm at the foot of California&#8217;s Santa Ynez Mountains, and finally to a small trading town in southern China where, on any given morning, a flower changes hands roughly every four seconds. In each place the crop is different\u2014roses, tulips, marigolds, ranunculus, carnations, chrysanthemums\u2014but the underlying plot repeats itself with the persistence of a rhyme: a climate that flower farming was built around is no longer the climate that shows up.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"kenyathelakethatgrowsrosesandthelakethatswallowsthem\">Kenya: The Lake That Grows Roses, and the Lake That Swallows Them<\/h2>\n<p>Lake Naivasha sits roughly ninety minutes by road from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, close enough that a rose can be cut on a Tuesday morning in Naivasha and stand in a vase in London by Wednesday afternoon. More than fifty commercial farms line its shores, making Kenya one of the top rose-exporting nations on Earth, sending flowers primarily to the European Union, the United Kingdom, and increasingly South Korea.<\/p>\n<p>For decades, the story told about Naivasha&#8217;s flower industry was a story about drought. Rose cultivation is famously water-intensive: estimates put the water needed to grow a single rose stem between seven and thirteen liters. In 2009, what Jane Ngiga, then chief executive of the Kenya Flower Council, called &#8220;the worst year in terms of drought, countrywide&#8221; emptied lakes across the Rift Valley and forced growers to reckon publicly with how much of the region&#8217;s water was being asked to grow flowers that would be enjoyed and discarded thousands of miles away.<\/p>\n<p>But the more disorienting turn for Naivasha&#8217;s growers has been the opposite one. Since around 2015, the lake has been rising\u2014not receding. Unusually heavy rains falling on the Aberdare mountain range have pushed water levels up year after year, in a pattern that has startled scientists and devastated communities living close to the shoreline. Lina Jamwa, head of membership engagement and communications at the Kenya Flower Council, describes farms that have simply watched the lake advance onto their land. &#8220;Some growers have already seen parts of their farms encroached by the rising lake waters, disrupting production activities in affected areas,&#8221; she has said.<\/p>\n<p>The volatility runs in both directions and on multiple fronts at once. Higher average temperatures and shifting rainfall patterns are disrupting growth cycles that rose varieties were bred to follow. New pests are finding their way into greenhouses that once excluded them by virtue of climate alone. An officer with the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service points to the False Codling Moth, a pest &#8220;that wasn&#8217;t there some years ago&#8221; and is now an emerging threat &#8220;with a changing behavior&#8221;\u2014a shift widely attributed to warming temperatures expanding the moth&#8217;s viable range.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick Mbugua, general manager of Wildfire Flowers Kenya, put the compounding pressure in plain terms: &#8220;We&#8217;ve seen increased disease pressure due to unusual weather patterns, sometimes we have excessive hot weather which sees a jump in the number of pests, and other times unusually low temperatures which increases fungal infections, reducing yields.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kenya&#8217;s flower sector, worth many billions of shillings annually, employs more than half a million people directly and indirectly. &#8220;Roses are a major part of the Kenyan economy,&#8221; said Mohamed Adow, director of the Nairobi-based think tank Power Shift Africa, framing the industry&#8217;s climate exposure as &#8220;yet another example of the future we face if governments continue to let the climate crisis wreak havoc.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"ethiopiaasecondriftvalleyasecondshrinkinglake\">Ethiopia: A Second Rift Valley, a Second Shrinking Lake<\/h2>\n<p>Nine hundred miles north and east of Naivasha, in Ethiopia&#8217;s own arm of the Great Rift Valley, a strikingly similar story is unfolding around Lake Ziway. Ethiopia&#8217;s floriculture industry has grown with remarkable speed over the past twenty years, much of it clustered along the shores of Ziway, where volcanic soils, equatorial light, and reliable freshwater once made for near-ideal growing conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Frank Ammerlaan, a second-generation Dutch rose grower, arrived in Ethiopia in 2006 to found AQ Roses, a family-owned nursery that now spans fifty hectares across two sites and exports more than one hundred million stems a year. &#8220;Climate-wise, growing roses is not ideal, even impossible in many places,&#8221; he has observed\u2014a reminder that Ethiopia&#8217;s advantage was always a matter of specific, local, and finite conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Those conditions are eroding. Lake Ziway has seen its water level drop by roughly a meter over two decades, and its surface area has shrunk by an estimated eight percent since the year 2000. Fish populations have declined, surrounding wetlands have dried, and communities that depend on the lake report growing scarcity. According to a 2024 Christian Aid analysis, roughly fifty-nine percent of all roses traded internationally originate in just five countries of the Global South\u2014Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Ecuador, and Colombia\u2014all now confronting escalating extreme-weather risk.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"colombiaandecuadorwhenfreezingandheatbothbecomeemergencies\">Colombia and Ecuador: When Freezing and Heat Both Become Emergencies<\/h2>\n<p>In South America&#8217;s flower-growing highlands, temperature swings arrive with almost no warning. Ecuador&#8217;s rose industry, centered on the volcanic Cayambe and Tabacundo valleys at altitudes between roughly 2,800 and 3,000 meters, has built its identity around near-constant equatorial daylight, cool nights, and intense highland sun\u2014a narrow band of stable conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Just across the border in Colombia, growers have learned this the hard way. In 2010, an unusually severe cold snap swept through the savanna surrounding Bogot\u00e1 just weeks ahead of Valentine&#8217;s Day\u2014the single most important date on the global flower calendar, responsible for roughly twelve percent of Colombia&#8217;s annual flower sales. Workers scrambled to spray water over rose beds in greenhouses, an old technique meant to release latent heat as the water froze. &#8220;El Nino is already bringing colder than normal nighttime temperatures to the area,&#8221; Alejandro Llano, general manager of Unique Collection Farms, told reporters at the time. A significant share of that year&#8217;s holiday production was lost to the freeze.<\/p>\n<p>Colombia&#8217;s 2010 rainy season was later determined to be the worst the country had experienced in sixty years, triggering widespread flooding that drove up costs as growers fought fungal disease. During the subsequent 2010\u201311 La Ni\u00f1a episode, national production losses among rose growers are estimated to have run between five and fifteen percent.<\/p>\n<p>More recent El Ni\u00f1o cycles have repeated the pattern with new variations. Before Valentine&#8217;s Day 2024, record-high temperatures pushed roses to bloom earlier than intended, throwing off carefully timed harvest schedules. &#8220;El Ni\u00f1o has definitely arrived with clear blue skies and high-temperature records across Colombia,&#8221; said Elkin Farf\u00e1n, a planning manager at the fillers-and-foliage producer Phytotech. &#8220;It is a challenging time for the industry, and many exporters are struggling to keep afloat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"thenetherlandstulipfieldsrewrittenbyrain\">The Netherlands: Tulip Fields Rewritten by Rain<\/h2>\n<p>Arjan Smit has spent his entire adult life among tulips, cultivating a family business his grandfather started in 1940 in Spierdijk, North Holland. &#8220;The climate has changed. We can feel that,&#8221; he told a reporter in 2024. &#8220;We have more wet periods. Last year, it was just raining, raining, raining, and you can see the result.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Walking his rows, he points out muddy gaps where entire tulips drowned. &#8220;It&#8217;s sometimes hard. Last winter, it was very wet. In total in our sector, we lost around eight to nine percent of the bulbs in the field. They were killed by water. And we planted four percent fewer. That means we are now starting to harvest our bulbs but we have lost a minimum of thirteen percent of the new bulbs for next year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The physics behind Smit&#8217;s losses are well understood: a warmer atmosphere holds more water vapor, translating directly into wetter winters across much of northwestern Europe. Tulip bulbs require a long, cold, relatively dry winter to develop properly; without it, stems come up short and flowers emerge lopsided or fail to bloom at all.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I started this work around thirty years ago, we had to water the fields two to four times in a spring season,&#8221; Smit said. &#8220;In the last ten years, sometimes we have to water every week. That means ten times. It&#8217;s much more expensive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The consequences have rippled into global supply. De Vroomen Garden Products, a major wholesale supplier of Dutch bulbs, reported that it could source only about eighty percent of the tulip bulbs the market required in 2024. What analysts initially projected as a twenty-percent shortfall grew to roughly thirty percent as the full damage became clear.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"indiamarigoldsmonsoonsandthefestivalcalendar\">India: Marigolds, Monsoons, and the Festival Calendar<\/h2>\n<p>In India, the weather&#8217;s assault on flower farming plays out on a shorter, more frequent cycle tied tightly to a ritual calendar that leaves growers almost no room to absorb a bad week. Marigolds occupy a specific place in Indian life: strung into garlands for weddings, temples, and festivals including Dussehra, Diwali, and Onam, they are grown by hundreds of thousands of smallholder farmers as a reliable secondary cash crop.<\/p>\n<p>In the autumn of 2025, days of unrelenting unseasonal rain destroyed large stretches of the region&#8217;s crop just as the flowers were approaching festival-season harvest. Standing water turned blooms black and rotten; humidity spread a fungal blight local farmers call karpya rog. &#8220;The flowers were just about to bloom when the rain came,&#8221; one grower reported. &#8220;Within a few hours, everything was destroyed. Now there&#8217;s no harvest, no market and no income.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The same pattern has recurred across India&#8217;s flower belt with almost mechanical regularity. In Karnataka&#8217;s Gadag district, growers of chrysanthemum, marigold, and jasmine lost heavily to unseasonal rain that struck just before the Ugadi festival. In Punjab, hailstorms caused losses of up to thirty-five percent for floriculturists growing roses and marigold timed for the Baisakhi wedding season.<\/p>\n<p>One farmer from Karmala coined a phrase that captures something distinctly modern about the crisis: &#8220;We appeal to the Chief Minister to declare a wet drought.&#8221; His phrase\u2014&#8221;a wet drought&#8221;\u2014describes conditions that combine the worst features of too much rain and too little, arriving out of season and stripped of the predictability that once let farmers plan their planting calendar.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"californiafireonthecentralcoast\">California: Fire on the Central Coast<\/h2>\n<p>In December 2017, the Thomas Fire\u2014at the time one of the largest wildfires in California&#8217;s history\u2014swept toward the seaside city of Carpinteria, home to a concentrated cluster of flower farms at the foot of the Santa Ynez Mountains. Dani Hahn, owner of Rose Story Farm, watched firefighters set a controlled backburn to stop the advancing blaze. &#8220;We know we live in a desert climate and are prone to wildfires,&#8221; she said afterward, &#8220;but I don&#8217;t think anyone could expect the scope of this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kasey Cronquist, then chief executive of the California Cut Flower Commission, described the region as having been &#8220;pretty fortunate&#8221;\u2014the fire had claimed a firefighter&#8217;s life and destroyed more than seven hundred homes. What could not be avoided was the interruption to shipping. &#8220;These aren&#8217;t crops that can just hang on trees and wait until this thing passes,&#8221; Cronquist noted. &#8220;It&#8217;s a very perishable product that just needs to keep moving.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Thomas Fire was, by later standards, an early warning. California&#8217;s subsequent decade has brought increasingly severe wildfire seasons, driven by prolonged drought and hotter average temperatures\u2014the same atmospheric shift responsible for flooding in Colombia, rising lakes in Kenya, and wet winters undermining Dutch tulip fields.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"japanspringarrivesaheadofschedule\">Japan: Spring Arrives Ahead of Schedule<\/h2>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s Meteorological Agency has tracked cherry blossom flowering dates with remarkable consistency since 1953, and the trend line has moved in one direction almost without exception: earlier. Tokyo&#8217;s cherry trees, which bloomed on average around March 29 between 1961 and 1990, had shifted to an average bloom date of March 24 by 1991\u20132020\u2014a movement of roughly 1.2 days per decade. In Kyoto, cherry blossoms hit full bloom on March 26 in one recent year, ten days ahead of the historical average and the earliest date since 1953.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our studies have shown that the start of cherry blossom season is closely linked with the average temperature in February and March,&#8221; Shunji Ambe, an official with the Japan Meteorological Agency, has explained. Elizabeth Wolkovich, an associate professor at the University of British Columbia, has called Japan&#8217;s cherry blossom record &#8220;one of the most powerful available windows into the pace of planetary warming.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There is an unsettling twist: cherry buds form during the preceding summer, then enter a dormant state that can only be broken by sufficient exposure to genuinely cold winter temperatures. Research on the unusually warm winter of 2023-2024 found that Somei-Yoshino cherry trees on Hachijojima, an island at the southern edge of the variety&#8217;s range, bloomed on the same date as trees on Aomori, roughly 860 kilometers to the north. Models suggest that under continued warming, Somei-Yoshino cherries could eventually stop flowering altogether at the southern limits of their current range.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"chinaamarketwhereaflowersellseveryfourseconds\">China: A Market Where a Flower Sells Every Four Seconds<\/h2>\n<p>In the small city of Dounan, on the outskirts of Kunming in Yunnan province, the scale of the modern flower trade becomes almost abstract. Yunnan is known as the &#8220;Flower Province,&#8221; and Kunming carries the nickname &#8220;City of Eternal Spring,&#8221; a reputation built on a genuinely rare high-altitude, subtropical-plateau climate. Those conditions have allowed Yunnan to become the source of roughly seventy percent of all commercially sold flowers in China, traded through markets where wholesale deals reportedly close once every four seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Even this favorable climate is not immune. In late November 2025, Yunnan experienced an unusually long rainy season that complicated cultivation, followed almost immediately by an early and unusually severe frost. Temperatures fell as low as minus 2.2 degrees Celsius, with sub-zero readings recorded inside greenhouses. Major growing districts reported extensive damage, hitting smaller and mid-sized growers hardest. Wholesale prices for some rose varieties rose by roughly twenty renminbi per bundle in the weeks that followed.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 id=\"whatthegrowersarelearningtogetherandapart\">What the Growers Are Learning, Together and Apart<\/h2>\n<p>No single story told here amounts, on its own, to proof of a planetary trend; weather has always been variable, and flower farming has always been a gamble against it. What is harder to dismiss is the pattern that emerges from stacking these stories side by side: a Kenyan lake that has reversed direction, rising instead of falling. An Ethiopian lake quietly shrinking as the flower economy along its shore keeps growing. Colombian growers spraying water onto roses to keep them from freezing one year, then racing to beat an early bloom caused by unprecedented heat a few years later. A Dutch farmer watering his fields ten times a season instead of two to four, still losing more bulbs to rot than he ever expected.<\/p>\n<p>Growers everywhere are adapting in the ways available to them\u2014solar power and crowd-financed irrigation upgrades in Kenya, biological pest control and carbon-neutral certification in Ecuador, drought-tolerant plant trials in Dutch gardens, disaster relief appeals from Indian marigold cooperatives, fire-preparedness infrastructure across California, and an accelerating push toward domestically bred, more climate-resilient flower varieties in Yunnan.<\/p>\n<p>None of these responses, on its own, resolves the underlying problem. Taken together, they describe an industry\u2014global, decentralized, and enormously labor-intensive\u2014improvising its way toward a future in which the climatic assumptions it was built on can no longer be taken for granted.<\/p>\n<p>What remains constant across every farm and every crop is the particular vulnerability of a flower itself: unlike grain, it cannot be stored against a bad season; unlike livestock, it cannot be moved out of danger; unlike almost any other commercial crop, its entire economic value depends on a narrow, specific, and often ceremonial window of time\u2014a wedding date, a religious festival, a single retail holiday\u2014that does not move to accommodate the weather, even when the weather refuses to cooperate.
